Weight management – Guidelines
March 30, 2021
Weight management is the term used to define both the behavioral changes and underlying biological processes that result in a person’s capacity to achieve and maintain a particular weight. Most weight management practices encompass daily physical activity and long-term dietary strategies which promote proper eating habits and healthy eating practices. It is also important to determine the primary reason for gaining weight. If you are obese, weight loss and/or management may be an important goal. Obesity can negatively impact your quality of life if you have a history of or current use of medications that are associated with complications such as high blood pressure, type II diabetes, and other heart conditions. It is important that individuals understand that weight management does not equal quick fixes or easy fixes. Weight management, while it can help to reduce the amount of body fat that you have, does not change the fact that you will continue to gain weight if you continue to have the same amount of weight that you currently have. Many people who are struggling to manage their weight are often unaware of the fact that they should be losing weight through diet and exercise, and not through an increase in body mass index (BMI). Losing weight in a healthy and controlled way can greatly improve one’s health and quality of life.
An increase in body mass index can have some negative effects, however, such as the development of poor posture, back pain, joint pain, and other health concerns. Excessive weight can even lead to the development of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, and other serious medical conditions. While weight loss can be achieved through diet and exercise, there are times when weight loss is not enough and when drastic measures are needed to change body composition or body mass index (BMI). These drastic measures may include undergoing surgery or taking medications such as prednisone and cortisone to suppress appetite. Losing too much weight can be dangerous to your health because the increased body mass index can make you susceptible to diseases and health risks. It is important to talk with your doctor about your weight loss goals and potential options for helping you lose excessive weight.
