Important Factors to Consider When Paying for Forklift Training

If you want to teach someone how to operate a forklift truck, there are a few things to remember before calculating forklift training costs. Check Forklift Training Systems.
Why should my business invest in training its employees?
Accidents involving forklift trucks result in serious injury or death every year. According to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), about 10% of these accidents was caused by a lack of operator experience.
As an employer, you are responsible for ensuring that all users of workplace tools and equipment receive adequate training to approved standards. Don’t forget that managers would need to be trained as well.

PUWER’s rules are as follows:

Employers must provide relevant instruction to workers, not only in the proper use of workplace equipment, but also in the associated risks and measures to take, in order to ensure employee health and safety.
For health and safety purposes, employers must ensure that workers in charge of or supervising the use of work equipment have received sufficient training. This training should include the systems that may be used when using the equipment, as well as any risks that such usage may pose and the precautions that should be taken.
Each industry has its own set of risks. There is always the possibility of a workplace injury, no matter how careful an organisation is. Of course, these mishaps, some of which result in death, are distressing for those involved and their families.
Even if no one is hurt, such incidents will cost the employer a lot of money. Vehicles may be damaged or destroyed, but so can the surrounding building and its fittings, as well as the items being handled at the time.

What will happen if I don’t take action?

Failure to train the operators may be considered a breach of the Work Equipment Provision and Use Regulations or the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations.
It is entirely likely that the Health and Safety Executive will seek to prosecute you in the event of an accident. Your company insurance will not protect you if it is discovered that you did not properly perform your duties in accordance with the Health and Safety At Work Act. Furthermore, if the directors are found to be responsible, they could face severe penalties.
There’s also the possibility that a conviction could result in unnecessary attention. As a result, there might be a loss of goodwill against the company, as well as a loss of revenue. This should be sufficient justification to ensure that the operators are well qualified in terms of health and safety regulations.

Which course of action should you take?

It’s that fast. Enable no untrained staff to operate a forklift truck, even though it is only used occasionally. Anyone who uses such equipment must have completed the necessary training and exams.
Your operator’s performance should be tracked on a regular basis once they’ve been qualified. This is clearly the safest way to ensure that forklift trucks and other similar equipment are used properly and safely. Failure to prepare your staff, as you are now aware, can have disastrous consequences.
It is not only beneficial, but also legally required, to implement a robust ongoing training programme. Of course, such a programme is essential to ensure the safety of critical employees.
