Painters have always been at the forefront when it comes to art, and this tradition has not changed over the years. The tradition of painting painlessly on canvases so as to keep them clean has started way back in the Middle Ages. It was only in later times, when painters started using oils as a medium. It was then that an article of faith was started that the alive painters were the virtuous men, and the dead painters were the good men too. They would wear white clothes to signify that they did not paint with their hands, which was also believed to make them pure and innocent.

The great masters like Rembrandt and others continued this tradition, painting in all colours and various strokes and forms. Only when they became boring and repetitive, did they begin to apply paint to the canvases, in the belief that they would be purged of guilt if they left the canvas dirty. This continues to be a valid theory till date. One has to be a good painter in order to paint without damaging the canvases. Many famous painters have left paintings dirty, even though they claimed that they cleaned it before hanging it on the wall.
