Stunning twilight colours give rise to the Maori name of this island, Rakiura, meaning land of the glowing skies, and this is as close to Antarctica as most people ever get. Whilst luxuriant bush offers walkers opportunities to see great varieties of native flora, the coastline is home to wild sea lions, penguins and seals, and this, together with its many inner islands, makes it a fascinating place to explore on foot.
You will remember your time on Stewart Island for many reasons, not least that youÂ’ll be made to feel like a local as soon as you arrive.
