On the edge of the Southern Alps, Nelson has many walks to tempt you to put your boots on and explore further. Tracks climb through beech forests alive with bird song where rare native birds are protected. Walk by glacial lakes or through forest with such a variety of plant life youÂ’ll be amazed how your guide knows them all. Nelson also has superb cafes, restaurants and its dynamic arts and craft industry influences many aspects of this charming city from excellent art galleries, to exciting exhibitions and lively markets. Sample itinerary: Sunday On arrival at Nelson airport you will be transferred to your B&B lodge in the centre of Nelson. The rest of this day is free to relax and explore the local short walks and in the evening you can enjoy one of the many superb eating-places in town.

Monday
Your guide will meet you at 9am at your B&B lodge and drive you along the coast to the start of your first walk (10 mins). Walk through coastal farmland with superb views across the bay to the Abel Tasman National Park. Continue to an area of unique bird life along the coast before returning to your accommodation in Nelson.

Tuesday
Visit the scenic Nelson Lakes area where you walk along part of the St Arnaud Range Track through ancient beech forest alive with the sounds of native bellbirds and tuis and even the rare native parrot, the kaka. There are great views from the summit of the whole lakes area for the energetic.

Wednesday
Transfers day for Taster Holidays and time to relax for Explorer clients. The list of things to do is endless and Nelson is a great place for crafts and art, many within easy reach of the town centre.

Thursday
Drive to the lower slopes of Mt Arthur. During this walk you will experience alpine landscapes. Explore some of the tracks on Mt Arthur where the seasonal flowers can be stunning. The views of the surrounding area are very rewarding and this is definitely a day to bring the camera.

Friday
Finish the week with a walk in the hills of the Pelorus valley exploring historic areas from some lovely river tracks and wooded hill paths through podocarp forest. Hear the thunder of waterfalls and walk along deep rivers overhung with trees.

Saturday
Feeling re-energized and refreshed at the end of your trip, if you have time, visit the local market to pick up some local handicrafts. This is an excellent market and has many fascinating stalls. Transfers are arranged to coincide with your onward travel.
