Originally made of large wood slats mounted in a frame, these shutters were intended to provide shade while enabling air to circulate through the space, keeping the interior of a building cool. These shutters have been around since the Middle Ages and were used in buildings with no glass windows. The shutters were closed in the winter or during stormy weather to keep the inside warm and dry, and they were left open in the summer to allow fresh air into the house.

Louvers can be made out of a variety of materials nowadays, but vinyl is one of the most common. Vinyl shutters are not only less expensive than wood shutters, but they also last much longer. Modern wood shutters chip, fade, and peel, while vinyl shutters do not. They’re also simple to clean with a simple cloth and a little soap if appropriate. These shutters are extremely moisture resistant, making them suitable for bathrooms, pools, and other areas where moisture is plentiful.

As an added bonus, most of these shutters don’t need any curtains or valances to finish the look of the window. The only possible exception is cafe shutters, which only go up about halfway up the frame, allowing for more light at the top while still maintaining privacy. Some people can prefer to add a valance to the open part of the window for decorative purposes and to close it if necessary.

Plantation shutters made of vinyl can be made to match almost any window, even round ones. When choosing shutters, make sure the slats are the right size for your window. Smaller windows should have no less than a 3/12; inch slat, and larger windows should have no less than a 3/12; inch slat. The tilt bar is another choice for your shutters. Originally located in the middle of the shutter, it can now be placed on the left or right side, or even concealed entirely. Consider having your shutters mechanised so that they can be changed to allow the perfect amount of light into the house or even opened on a whim for a truly modern look. Many of these new shutters are also easy to mount, which saves you money on a professional installation.
